Dazzling fireworks, tasty barbecued treats, and near-naked men are all most of us have on our minds today. And that’s fine—especially since 9.5% of Americans are currently out of work. Escapism is necessary and justifiable sometimes.
But, while some well-paid members of Congress make concessions to big business over health care reform (health care costs are expected to rise another 9% in 2010!), it is important to remember what today is really about: a celebration of the declaration of independence from a repressive, tax-abusing government.
Independence Day is truly the punk rock holiday! We're talking Iggy and the fuckin' Stooges punk rock.
Which is why we chose Green Day’s “Holiday” over Madonna’s: it is a battle cry to rally the people of a broken Republic. That, and we have a long-standing crush on GD's bisexual front man Billie Joe Armstrong. BTW, has anyone ever seen him in the same room as fellow elfin-cutie Elijah Wood? Just asking.

As we celebrate our independence, the citizens of The Islamic Republic of Iran are risking their lives by protesting presidential election fraud in their country, which occurred here in 2000 (Florida) and 2004 (Ohio). At that time, many of us just sat around reading about Paris Hilton in People magazine. Sometimes escapism isn’t the answer.
For those itching to feed their inner patriotic punk, there are the mid-term elections next year, giving us another opportunity to vote out inept politicians who are foreclosing on the American dream (that includes you, Governator). We also have their phone numbers, email and office addresses. Your voice can be heard, if you shout in the right direction. We voted Obama in by a landslide, thus preventing election fraud from working this time around. But the buck doesn’t stop there. One man cannot fix America. It takes a village.
“I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies, this is the dawning of the rest of our lives,” is what Billie Joe had to say. What about you? What do you have to say? And to whom?
This is your life.
This is your life on holiday.
Any questions?

Michael, where did you hear that Billie Joe Armstrong is bisexual? Granted, this excites me so much (and I hope this is, indeed, true) and I have read many of his interviews but I have NEVER heard this.

Billie Joe told The Advocate he was bi back in '95. Here's a link:
