Here is some "better late than never" news for you about Bill "DOMA and don't ask, don't tell" Clinton. Almost 20 years too late, the former president, who will solely and unequivocally be remembered throughout history for cheating on his wife in the White House, says that gay marriage is OK. Uhh, thanks, Bill:
After speaking in Washington, DC, on July 8, the former president was asked if he supported same-sex marriage. Clinton, in a departure from past statements, replied in the affirmative.
Asked if he personally supported same-sex marriage, Clinton replied, "Yeah."
"I personally support people doing what they want to do," Clinton said. "I think it's wrong for someone to stop someone else from doing that [same-sex marriage]."
You know, it's nice that people like Clinton are "evolving" (i.e., discovering that it's politically acceptable to be honest as various state/national polls reflect growing support for gay marriage), but let this be a reminder to all of us that we should never rely on our elected officials to lead the charge or champion issues that, while controversial to some, are basic components of a free and equal society. It's up to us.
That being said, if Clinton "coming out" in support of equality can have a ripple effect and change even one other person's mind out there, then this old hillbilly BJ lover is fine with us.
