If there's one thing we learned at this year's GayVN Awards, it's that drama sells. How else to explain all the brouhaha surrounding Michael Lucas' showdown with Brent Corrigan? From all the copy their run-in has gotten, you'd almost forget that there had been an awards show this past weekend.
Of course, it's easy to forget an awards show that wasn't all that memorable, despite the admirable efforts of two industry giants. But with all due respect to both GayVN and NakedSword (who co-produced the event), we kind of have to agree with the audience member who was overheard exclaiming, "Forget Mason Wyler; the biggest train wreck this year is this show!"
Not everyone seemed to mind the show as much as we did. "I usually hate these things, but I've had a lot of fun the last two years," Raging Stallion Studios President Chris Ward was overheard saying at the awards afterparty at Wunderland. Of course, one has to wonder if Ward would have enjoyed the show half as much if his movies (Grunts last year, To the Last Man this year) hadn't swept all the major awards for the last two years.
Still, there were some fun moments to be had. Alec Mapa's hilarious riffs on the football dancers ("Wow, they really spared no expense on the production values this year") and sexual positions ("If you've never gotten fucked before, do it this weekend!") were a big hit, as were Margaret Cho's jokes about recession porn ("I'll get off to a thumbnail, I don't care!") and writing songs ("I started playing guitar because I saw Madonna doing it and figured, How fucking hard could it be?"). Cho even performed a little ditty about the 9.2-inch cock of Ricky Sinz, whom she had met a few days earlier on the set of a photo shoot for Unzipped magazine. Elsewhere, we were touched by the teary-eyed speech that Dean Phoenix gave after accepting his Hall of Fame trophy. Who knew that fucking on-camera could have such an emotional impact on someone?
We got several good pics throughout the night, so let's share some more with you now.

It's funny that you write that we'd forget there was an actual Awards show this weekend given all the press on Michael Lucas and Brent Corrigan. But considering you generated almost half of it, it rings hollow. The photos are nice but, Jesus, when are these NakedSword PR Juggernauts going to find a different cloth to drape? That's the real story here. Should the porn-adoring public be regularly subjugated to these off-white vinyl body bags in the background that pass for "Red Carpet" couture? C'mon, Unzipped. Less catfight and more analysis.

That's just our point: That most of the press on ALL the blogs was focused on Lucas-Corrigan, not on the show itself. Which is exactly why we published this entry. Thanx for your criticism. You certainly do seem to generate your fair share of it.
