Another day, another Join The Impact event to protest the passage of Prop 8 and spread the word about restoring marriage equality for gays and lesbians. This time, it's called Light Up The Night, and everyone is encouraged to go to designated locations nationwide on December 20th and hold up a candle, or a glow stick, and stand around looking dignified.
Look, I don't want to force my cynicism on any of you, and I know there are plenty of you who will disagree with me, with good reason, but this is kind of lame, right?
Check out the official instructions:
- Grab a candle, glow stick, or flashlight to stand out from the other shoppers
- Go to your city page and join a group that is already organizing, or volunteer to organize in your city
- Make or buy a “2nd Class Citizen” t-shirt and show everyone the rights not afforded to the LGBTQ community
- Print out our “5 Rights Holiday Cards” and pass them out to shoppers. This is a great way of educating the masses on the exact legal protections that our government does not provide us.
First of all, I'm not looking for pity, and have no interest in wearing a "2nd Class Citizen" t-shirt. Thanks, but no thanks. Second, people who voted "Yes" on 8 aren't likely to have their minds changed by protesters, no matter how somber their demonstration. If common sense and fairness didn't work out on November 4th, how is interrupting last minute Christmas shoppers with pamphlets going to be any different?
I'm holding out for next March, when the California State Supreme Court hears arguments regarding the constitutionality of Prop 8. If we lose here, then I'll support every protest there is, particularly the louder, more riotous ones (fuck you, Pat Boone).
Until then, I'll show my dignity with patience, not self-deprecating t-shirts.
